Alabama Butterflies  

Over 100 species of butterflies can be seen and attracted here in Alabama. Here are just a few, along with their host food preferences:

          

Alabama State Butterfly

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio glaucus

Host Foods: Trees (Ash, Yellow Poplar, Plums)
Note: The female can appear in the black form, as well as the yellow form.


Black Swallowtail
Papilio polyxenes
Host Foods: Carrots, Parsley, Queen Ann’s Lace, Fennel


Spicebush Swallowtail
Papilio troilus
Host Foods: Sweet Shrub,, Bay Trees, Camphor Trees, Pines, Sassafras


Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui
Host Foods: Thistles, Mallows, many composites
