Nix Center Begins

Coffee With a Cop

A new Nix Center program called "Coffee With a Cop" will enable seniors and others to meet face to face with a Fairhope Police officer to ask questions and learn about how to deal with scams, fraud, and other issues of interest. The programs will be held on the second Tuesday of every month at 9:00 am and are open to the public. Officer John Hamrick will be the presenter for the first session on Tuesday,

August 14.

"For this first session, I will focus on scams that typically target seniors, but basically this is an opportunity for seniors to ask questions and get answers," Officer Hamrick said. "It's a way for the public to learn from the police and for the police to learn from the public about what's on their minds."

Hamrick will talk about Internet scams that he said are "alarmingly prevalent" among seniors in our community. "We take reports on this all the time: anything from people who have lost a hundred dollars through some scam, like fake emails saying a friend is in trouble and needs cash, up to cases of individuals who have been taken for thousands of dollars. It might be the case of an unscrupulous person wooing a widow with emails and asking for money, or it might be a fake investment opportunity. Seniors need to know how to recognize these scams. Often, the easy answer is, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But people fall for these things all the time."

The monthly Coffee With a Cop programs will cover other type of scams and frauds and will also give the public the opportunity to talk about any concerns or issues they may have, Hamrick said.

"Coffee With a Cop is catching on nationwide as a tool for improving communication between citizens and police," said Sgt. Craig Sawyer, assistant administrator with the Fairhope Police Department. "The issues covered are really up to the attendees. We can discuss anything that the group wants, from crime to community events. It's a very informal setting where citizens can share concerns, ask questions, dispel rumors, and get to know their police officers.

Sawyer said FPD officers would take turns on a volunteer basis to attend the Nix Center sessions. "We want each to have an opportunity to meet with community members and for the citizens to have the chance to get to know us."

For more information on Coffee With a Cop at Nix Center, call 928-2835.

Nix Center Offering Zumba Gold Program

The James P. Nix Center is now offering the Zumba Gold Fitness Program as part of their weekly exercise activities. The class is offered every Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. and is taught by certified Zumba

instructor Joni Wofford. The Zumba Gold fitness program is a specialty course designed to meet the anatomical, physiological, and psychological needs of the aging population.

Like the traditional Latin-inspired Zumba workout, the Zumba Gold workout incorporates many of the dance/fitness routines set to Latin and international rhythms but is performed at a lower intensity. "Dancing can be a lot of fun and a lot of times you don't realize you're exercising because you're enjoying it so much," says Wofford. "We have every skill level in our class from beginner to advanced, those attending take it at their own pace and work to improve a little each week."

For additional information stop by the Nix Center at 1 Bayou Drive or call 928-2835.
