GARBAGE

Residential Garbage Service

Garbage collection begins at 1:00 a.m. Cans should be placed on your right of way the night before collection and should be removed the same day as collection. Cans are not be placed at the curb earlier than 24 hours before your scheduled collection.

Garbage must be bagged and contained in a  city-issued automated garbage can. Call 251-928-8003 if you do not have one. These cans are the property of the City of Fairhope and residents are responsible for any damage or theft.

All household waste and small bulk waste is considered garbage.  This includes food, animal waste, chemical and gardening containers, and any non-recyclable containers.   Small electronics are also garbage, but may be recycled at the recycling center.

Bio-hazardous materials, such as hypodermic needles, are a special care item, please call 251-928-8003 for proper placement.

Commercial Garbage Service

Businesses are limited to  (1) 64 gallon cart.  If more than (1) 64 gallon cart is needed then business must purchase one or more 96 gallon carts.  Businesses are encouraged to purchase the 96 gallon cart to accommodate for larger bulk waste, such as Styrofoam, plastic wrap, etc. The cost is $65.00 to purchase a cart.  The City of Fairhope does not service dumpsters.  Businesses will be charged per polycart, with rates beginning at $17.25 per month for a two time per week pick up.  Businesses may elect up to five times per week pick up (Monday through Friday). Minimum charge per month is $15.55 for (1) 64 gallon cart, or $17.25 per 96 gallon for a 2 times per week service.

All garbage must be contained.  Boxes must be broken down (for recycling) with all filler material, including styrofoam peanuts, enclosed in garbage can/polycart.  Businesses will be charged according to how much garbage they generate, and all businesses are encouraged  to recycle.  Boxes not broken down or containing loose materials will be considered excess garbage, and monthly fee may be adjusted.

Call to find out more about commercial recycling, including cardboard recycling.  Cardboard is picked up from area businesses every Wednesday (no charge) and additional days may be added, if needed.   We will accommodate your needs.

TRASH

Trash includes yard waste (limbs, leaves, grass), crates, old furniture, appliances and bulk materials and is collected weekly.

Yard waste must be separated from all other materials for yard waste recycling pickup.  DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS! Traditional plastic bags are not 100% biodegradable and do not fit in with the City’s yard waste recycling program. Composting at home is an excellent idea, also. If you bag your yard waste, please use our earth-friendly, compostable bags (available at City Hall and area hardware/garden shops for a minimal price).

Containers are NOT trash!  All containers which have had food or chemicals in them at one time must be contained with garbage, not trash. Also, remember garden pots must be bagged with garbage, too.

Any debris that may blow must be contained.  Do not place trash or debris in sidewalks or in roads and drainage areas.

Yard waste may be placed at curbside for pick up at any time.  Other trash, such as furniture and bulk items, may not be placed out for pick up more than 24 hours before pick up.  Call us if you are unsure which day is your “trash” pick-up day. You may call 990-0192 for specific information on your pick-up schedule.

Small electronics are considered "garbage" and should be placed beside your garbage can (radios, stereos, microwaves). However, Computer peripherals should be brought in for recycling to 555 South Section Street, Publics Works Dept.
